In the other Wes Moore’s life, hip-hop played a special role. The other Wes Moore had a dream of becoming a rapper because he felt like music gave him a sense of purpose and direction. He did not want to be like his brother and become a drug dealer. His brother Tony was a drug dealer, and he always encouraged the other Wes Moore to go down a different path, but he based a lot of what he did off of his brother because he saw him succeeding. While hip-hop played a crucial role in the other Wes’s life, it also resonated with the author Wes. Hip-hop sort of served as a bridge between the two with how they resonated with the emotions of the music even though they took very different paths.

Music historically has had a way of bringing people together. Look at the present day, there are music festivals all over the world like Rolling Loud, Boiler Room, Coachella, etc. Everyone from all over the world comes to gather at these events and all bond over the same thing. Like Wes Moore and the other Wes Moore, these people come from all different walks of life yet all share a bond and are able to relate to the lyrics and emotion of the music. Music, food, and pop culture, all have a funny way of relating to people from all over the world with all different backgrounds.

While I would not consider music to be a part of my life like the other Wes Moore did, it plays a pretty integral part in putting me in a proper mindset for anything I am about to do. Whenever I was playing a sport, I used to listen to the same songs in order to prepare me for the game I was about to play. Music can put you in a zone and take you to places mentally that seem impossible without it. There is no better feeling in the world than listening to songs that hype you up whether before a game or in the gym and you’re just completely locked in while hearing the music play in your ears.

Besides putting me in the right mindset, music has helped me create some amazing memories with my friends that I will never forget. We have been to tons of concerts together and when we all hangout and there's music on we’re all singing it together and having a blast. People also tend to associate songs with certain memories. There’s one song in particular that everyone has heard at least once, Boys a Liar part 2 with Ice Spice. When that song came out last year, all my friends and I were out at a bar and when we heard it, we just exploded because it’s just so catchy we couldn't help ourselves. Once all the other guys saw us doing it, they followed suit and it’s just a core memory now and it’ll forever be associated with that song. Music will forever help people create memories, bring them together, inspire creativity, and change the world.

  1. Hello Rob! Good work on this week's blog post. I like how you mentioned the relationship between music and memories. I didn't touch on that in my blog post however I would agree that I have created several core memories surrounded by music. Your post also got me thinking... besides memories, I also associate certain music with certain points in my life, whether it was when I was extremely young and going to school for the first time or when I was a middle schooler. If I ever hear a certain song that was prevalent in my life at a certain moment the nostalgia instantly kicks in. Overall, keep up the hard work!

  2. Hi Rob! Loved your blog. I completely agree with you about the effect music has on people and how it can connect them no matter where they come from or which path they are walking in life. Also, I do the same thing before performing; I don't have a specific song I listen to before going onstage, but there is a specific vibe in the music I listen to in those moments. Keep up the good work!
